Troubleshoot Azure virtual machine boot failures using Boot Diagnostics, serial console, disk checks, extensions and recovery workflows.
01

Check the VM state

Confirm whether the VM is running, stopped, deallocated or repeatedly restarting. Review Activity Log events around the failure.

02

Review Boot Diagnostics

Inspect the screenshot and boot log for bootloader, disk, driver or operating system errors.

03

Use Serial Console when available

For supported scenarios, Serial Console can provide direct access to the guest when network connectivity is unavailable.

04

Check the OS disk

Review disk status, capacity, encryption and recent changes. Avoid replacing or detaching the OS disk without understanding the boot failure.

05

Review extensions

A failed extension can affect configuration or startup. Check extension status and operation history.

06

Recovery validation

After remediation, verify boot completion, network access, application services and Azure VM health.
